Verse of the day.
Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
It is commonplace to see a great degree of loyalty among very good friends. You would usually find that when someone dislikes a particular person, directly or indirectly, their friends begin to also express a similar distaste for the person in question. This is like an unwritten code of friendship.
Our text today begins by addressing the matter of loyalty. An adulterer/adulteress is a person who is unfaithful to someone they have promised to stay with. They are wanderers, floaters and double-minded people who are either unsure of what they want or want to stay on the fence in an attempt to taste both worlds when faithfulness is called for. Our friendship with God begins here.

We cannot sincerely walk with God if an allegiance has not been pledged; if we have not made up our minds to follow the One who called us in His love. When this has not happened, like Gomer (Hosea 3:1), we become people who crave idols over God Himself.
God does not detest the people of the world – far from it (John 3:16). He detests its system of operation. The world is filled with the lust of the eyes, of the flesh and pride of life (1 John 2:16). It encompasses all that draws our heart’s affections, attention, and adoration away from God.
Father wants us fully satisfied in Him and fully in love with Him, for when we see Him as utterly desirable, courting the world becomes unthinkable. We are God’s friends and because we know God is no friend to the world and its system, our loyalty should stand sure.
Unmistakably, God hates the world’s system as it is entirely opposed to all that He is. The world also hates God and would not have Him lead it (Luke 19:14). How then can we make friends with the world if we desire friendship with God? How can the desires, motivations, affections, and convictions of the world be ours even while we claim to rest in the arms of our Lover? It doesn’t work that way.
Father wants us fully satisfied in Him and fully in love with Him, for when we see Him as utterly desirable, courting the world becomes unthinkable.Click To Tweet
Father, You are my friend. I renounce every friendship with the world and pledge allegiance to You alone. I am your faithful friend.
