Nothing Without Him.

Day 52
Verse of the day.

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

John 15:4

There is a relationship between the Father, Son and you in this description of the Vine Keeper, the True Vine, and its branches.

For a fruit to be borne, it needs to come off a branch. For a branch to bear fruits, it needs to be attached to a vine from which it derives its nutrients. When a branch doesn’t bear fruits despite its physical attachment to the vine – it’s profession of the vine’s lordship, then it doesn’t derive its strength from the vine.

When Jesus requests of us to abide in Him, He asks us to be attached to and draw nourishment of life and godliness from Him, for He knows that we are nothing without Him. We can bear no fruits of and by ourselves; and when we don’t bear fruits, it’s only ideal that the Husbandman cuts us off.

We are called to bear fruits that might ‘remain’. Fruits that remain are positive, valued fruits that last.

One simple principle needed for abiding is obedience. Obedience is akin to wisdom. The fruits we bear are the fruits of the Spirit; the fruits of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faith, gentleness, meekness, temperance and more etc. (Galatians 5:22). These are the evidences of our walk with God which on their own guide people to Him. It is His desire that our lives serve as a beacon, bringing all else to Him, rather than chase them away.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.

Proverbs 11:30

The act of bearing fruits and winning souls to God is wisdom. The inaction of this is foolishness. So you might say, ‘Okay, I am not bearing any fruits and I am not offending anyone. Would I still be cut off?’ Yes! There is no fence-sitting in following Christ, for you bear the mandate of God. The Father’s business requires urgency so you can’t choose to lie somewhere in the middle. (Revelations 3:15-16).

You are either bearing fruits and being pruned to bear more OR not bearing fruits and being set to get cut off. Hopefully, you choose to remain in God and bear fruits today.

Today’s Prayer:

Father, I am nothing without You and everything with You. By Your Strength and Life, I am a fruit bearer in Your kingdom.

  1. These are very sound words, Tomi. You have through this reminded me of the need of operating from a place of rest in Him – the only way to live out this Life of God. God bless you richly.
