Power Of The Tongue

Day 35
Verse of the day.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 18:21

God is particular about words. The events of creation proved this. He could have created at the snap of His fingers. Instead, He spoke things into being.

God’s Word is laced with Life. His Word is Life. Hence, His Word never fails. This explains why we should never doubt Him.

Just like it is with God, our tongue holds immense power. As the verse of the day puts it, death and life are in the power of the (this) tongue.

Often, when we come across this verse, one of the first things we do is employ it in making positive proclamations over our lives, and wellbeing, and declaring things into being. This works, but it is not all there is to it. The truer application of these words come more into play in our constant interactions with people.

Every word we speak to everyone we meet holds the capacity to positively or negatively affect their inner being. We either pull them towards Life or push them towards Death with the words we speak. We must learn to speak with this understanding in mind.

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Colossians 4:6

Words are timeless. Sometimes they produce immediate results, other times they don’t. Speak exhortative words nonetheless. Some fruits are biannual, some annual, some biennial but they eventually come.

So, when you find a child, an adult, who has nothing but hate for himself or herself, offer them life through your words, tell them what’s true about them, that they are dearly loved by God.

Never call yourself a sinner if you have been redeemed by Christ. Conquer evil with your kind words. Recompense curses with blessings. Speak life and only life – speak only the things God would speak and nothing more. Speak against evil and in support of good. Banish lies, curses, hateful and oppressive words, in exchange for truth, blessings, loving and uplifting words.

Consider the sanctifying effect of having God call you His beloved, and do likewise to yourself and someone else today.

Minister life, never death. In time, you’ll find the fruits of your words in your life and in the lives of others.

Today’s Prayer

Henceforth, I harness the power of the tongue in ministering life to all who hear me. My words are always with grace and truth. They bring life and healing to everyone who hears me.

    1. Yes, it is, Deborah. And rather than be discouraged that our words don’t seem to bring immediate results, we can rest knowing that this principle also finds application in such cases.

  1. God bless you Michael.
