Verse of the day.
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
God is a God of order. He rules the Universe by certain principles that we see so reflected in scriptures: both in the Old and New Testament. The Moon goes down and the Sun comes up, the seasons come and go at set times, even the very Laws of Science prove the existence of a Supreme Being orchestrating all that order. And one of the major principles determined by God’s nature is Authority.
Everything in all of creation is subject to God and answerable to Him. Even if now we do not yet see all things brought under Him (Hebrews 2:8). When we become believers, we voluntarily bring ourselves under the authority of Christ; we submit to Him in all totality. Being under Christ’s authority as a believer is one thing Satan fears; for a person under God’s authority is shielded by God who is the Highest Authority.
Our text today tells us that everyone should be subject to governing authorities and these include those who have been placed over us in whatever jurisdiction from the national level, state even down to our workplace, schools, churches, and homes. Every authority is ordained by God; “for there is no authority except from God” (Romans 13:1b).
Only one who has been submitted to God’s authority can submit to a fellow man. For this submission is not based on who the man is or what he has done but on God’s authority in that person. This was what Ham did not understand when he mocked and exposed the weakness of his father, Noah, who got drunk; thereby acting out the rebellion in his heart (Genesis 9:20-25)
Suppose by way of illustration the Queen of England sends a messenger to you, perhaps even the lowest in rank of her servants and such a person came to your house “in the name of the Queen”. How will you treat him? As a servant? Of course not! You would treat such a person with utmost respect and obey whatever they say simply because he was sent by the Queen.
So also, God wants us to submit to authorities not because they are perfect or because of who they are but by reason of His authority in them.
Only one who has been submitted to God’s authority can submit to a fellow man. For this submission is not based on who the man is or what he has done but on God’s authority in that person.Click To Tweet
Father, help me learn to submit first to Your authority. Give me also the grace and humility to subject myself to all the other authorities You have ordained.
