Verse of the day
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage
Today, we celebrate Nigeria’s 58th year since her independence. For some, this is a celebratory event, for others, one of concern with a desire to see the nation freed from its ills, and freed to flourish.
These views to the nation’s independence hold a few salient lessons for the believer. Just as the nation received its freedom many years ago, even so, more than 2000 years ago, mankind received its freedom from the bondage of sin, self, and Satan. We received this freedom through the death and resurrection of Jesus which we also commemorate at Easter. In addition, although this victory was gotten over two millennia ago, we, in receiving Christ, came into it at different intervals in time, for which cause some of us also still celebrate our ‘second birthday’: the day we received Christ into our lives.
But above the celebrations, we have received a higher calling — by the Spirit and the Word — a calling to stand fast in the liberty by which Christ has made us free and not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. If we acknowledge our salvation from the bondage of sin granted us by Jesus Christ, then the greatest celebration and offering of Thanksgiving we can offer is to live in a way that is acceptable to God and reflective of our freedom from bondage and from the fear of the enemy. If we cannot do this, then all other celebrations are fruitless. For we were not saved to eat and drink but to live in righteousness, in peace, and in joy in the Holy Ghost.

Thank you, Jesus, for bringing me Salvation, and liberty from bondage to sin and all it brings. Beyond the fanfare, I commit myself to celebrate this liberty each day by living free of my past sinful entanglements and serving You acceptably. And I decree righteousness, peace, and joy over Nigeria, its leaders, and entire citizenry.
