First of Lights.

Day 13
Verse of the day.

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

John 1:4

In this verse is contained two most fascinating words – life and light. One would think, however, that the order should be different. The verse perhaps should have been written thus:

“In Him was light, and the light was the life of men”

After the fall of man, darkness laid claim to what was once entirely God’s – the heart of man. Shouldn’t it have been that God, Who is Light, would shine this Light in our hearts to win us back to Himself? But no. Take a moment, please, to examine another verse for clarity.

“For you were once darkness…”

Ephesians 5:8

There we have it. The problem wasn’t that darkness now ruled or owned our hearts, or that we now housed evil within us, but that we BECAME darkness. We lost the capacity and right to access God. We died.

God’s purpose, His aim was not to GIVE us light. His purpose was to MAKE us light. This is why He sent His Son as a portal, a passage Way into this new place (John 14:6). We had become something (contrary to His plan and design), and He wanted to make us something else. He wanted to make us like Him, so He ‘re-did’ what was in the beginning, at the creation of man.

This gives a better picture of what the phrases ‘born again’, ‘born anew’, ‘new BIRTH’ and ‘new life’ mean. They have been tossed around for so long that people could experience it and yet not know the full import of what has taken place in and to them, and as a result cannot truly be free. Only in knowing the truth are we set free.

“…but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of Light”

Ephesians 5:8

The verse concludes, helping us understand why John 1:4 is in fact written in the right order. We receive this (new) life, we BECOME life and are seen by others as a reflection (a replica, an image) of our Father. They know He is here because we are.

Today’s Prayer

Father, I thank You for the Life I now have through your Son Jesus. Help me grow in this consciousness each and every day, that I may truly represent Who You are, in and to me.
