Verse of the day
But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night?’
Everyone can sing in the day. When the cup is full and overflowing, when comforts abound and wealth and harvest are in abundance, when happiness is full, friends and family are present, and life is preserved; everyone can draw inspiration from these and sing. It is easy to sing in such moments for the lights of comfort with which one sees the written down notes and sing along, are in their abundance. Maybe on such days, one sings only from the heads and not exactly from the hearts.
But, how about the inevitable nights, which in addition to being a time of rest from much labour for some can be a time of terror, alarm and gloom for many others? Do we sing when trials, temptations, persecutions are rife and at their fullest; when mere living and our pursuit of God and in His will become perilous? Can we like Paul retain joy despite being whipped, exposed to death, again and again, denied and left alone by our countrymen, shipwrecked, lived in weariness and pain and sleepless nights?
We may often struggle to retain joy in trials when we fail to place our attention on Who really matters; when, rather than keep our eyes on God from where all help really comes, we look left and right to see how we may escape our troubles. God is the only one who gives songs in the night; songs that may not be read from the lights of comfort, but songs sung from the heart.
None of our situations come as a surprise to Him, therefore He sees the order in the things we call chaos and sees the beauty our trials make in us. In His eyes and heart, all things work together for those who love Him.
The call today is for us to look to God when all is dark and gloomy. He alone gives songs in the night.

I’ll never look away from You, Dad. As I am helped of You, I’ll keep beholding You in the day of comfort and activity, and in the night of trials and rest.
