Sacrifice Isn’t Always Love

Day 173
Verse of the day

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned but have not love, it profits me nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:3

“There is love in sharing” is a common saying used very often especially when it concerns the matter of giving. It is used to show that giving/sharing is a sure sign of love. But we would find that this is not completely true.

Today’s text points us to something amazing. We see that there are a lot of generous people around. People who could be so kind enough to give ALL they have, sacrifice to their last penny to others. How marvelous! Another, maybe, higher level of sacrifice is one’s willingness to be burned alive for a cause or for the good of another. We are talking excruciating death and a giving up of oneself! A look at these acts and we would quickly conclude that such a person must love so much to make such a depth of sacrifice. Yet we see that it is very possible to give and sacrifice all and not have love!

As believers, part of God’s dealings with us as we progress in Him is for Him to begin showing us that anything that is less than God will never be enough. He shows us that no matter how good it may seem, the flesh will always profit NOTHING. Good is not always God.

God will never allow or accept anything that is not HIM. And what is “Him”? Love. Scriptures tell us that God IS Love. So whenever we put so much effort to present something that is less than Him, He sees through it, sees through all the grand acts of goodness and declares it to be NOTHING. And no one likes spending so much energy and time doing NOTHING.

Anything apart from God, anything outside His Life and Nature, no matter how wonderful, dazzling, grand and excellent before men, is nothing.

Giving is great, don’t get it wrong, but every act of generosity must never precede that true, pure, SELF-less Love that comes from God. This Love will eventually birth sacrifices and like God who gave His Son for the world in Love, we will usually find Love compelling us to make sacrifices.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, help me love truly. Help me never settle for anything that is not You.
