Verse of the day.
We love because He first loved us.
God’s standards are way too high for us. And just like many truths regarding our faith, we hear this truth so often but pay little attention to its true meaning. Whatever God requires of us, He requires it be done His Way – His perfect Way.
A Call and Command
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength”
Deuteronomy 6:5, Mark 12:30
Such a lofty command from God is scary – at least to me, it is. It’s not one that’s easy to live up to. This is because many things exist which compete for our affection and devotion to Him; and many times, we choose them over Him. But God makes a demand on us, the reason for which He created us – for Himself. How then can we meet this demand?
To ask of us something we lack the ability to give would be wicked, and we know wicked is the last thing our God is. This is why He provided us with the ability to keep His commands before He even gave the commands. Revelations 13:8 tells us “…the Lamb slain from (before) the foundation of the world.”. What has this got to do with love and how does this help us understand what love means and how it changes the way we live?
Love is an Action Word
Our idea of love in its purest form can never match God’s standards. Love is beyond a fuzzy feeling. 1 Corinthians 13 offers a beautiful checklist of what love may look like. No one can live up to that checklist – not without receiving divine help.
“For God so loved the Word that He gave…” Love gives. Love does. Love goes the extra mile. Love releases. Love bestows what cannot be earned, and what is undeserved. Love looks the offender in the eye, leans forward and pulls him/her into a warm embrace. No one can love this way by their own strength.Love gives. Love does. Love goes the extra mile. Love releases. Love bestows what cannot be earned and what is undeserved.
Love is a Person
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love“ (1 John 4:7-8).
You only have the capacity to love when you have come to receive the expressions of God as Love towards you. Love is Who He is, Who we must receive, Who we must give, who we must become. This is the order He set in place “before the foundation of the world”.
We love because He first loved us. We become divine. Like our Father, Like our Friend, Like our God. The struggle ends. You only have the capacity to love when you have come to receive the expressions of God as Love towards you.
