Verse of the day
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Adam and Eve had just eaten from the very tree God asked them not to. Their eyes were opened and they saw that they were naked. This was not just a knowing of a fact but it was a fact seen from a new awareness – of shame and everything alien from what God made them. They had both entered a reality that sin alone could create.
Then they heard God moving in the cool of the day and their response was not to run to the Father but to hide. How did they go from being unashamed by their nakedness to hiding because of it? How did they go from basking in God’s presence to running away from Him? It was because of sin.
Sin created a barrier between them and not only because it was displeasing to God but also because it created a new awareness in them that kept them away.
Several years down the line, this same pattern can be found in every human being. It is a very common thing for a person to hide from God’s presence when they sin, despite the promise of forgiveness based on Christ’s sacrifice.
After genuine repentance through faith in His promise of forgiveness, we are forgiven. It is not humility or brokenness to hide away from God. In fact, true repentance and faith will make us hate the sin that tried to mess with our relationship with Him and cause us to cling even harder to Him with confidence. This is what John Piper calls “gutsy guilt”.
It makes no sense for a sick man to hide from his doctor. It is pride and faithlessness that keeps us hiding away from God’s presence when we miss our step. God’s first question when we sin is, “where are you?” He constantly seeks us out to forgive.
So repent, rise up and run into the Father’s arms with shameless, courageous faith.
Lord, thank You for the gift of forgiveness. I receive help to walk with You with courageous faith.
