Verse of the day
…that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
Towards the end of Jesus’life here on earth, He prayed for His disciples. It wouldn’t be farfetched to say that considering the urgency of the situation, His prayers reflected the paramount issues of His heart.
Jesus prayed for the unity of His disciples and likened this unity with what exists between Him and the Father.
Christ and His Father have a unique relationship. It is a mystery, an open secret. Jesus lived fully dependent on the Father while He lived on earth. The Father also did nothing except with the knowledge of the Son.
Their roles and person were so intertwined that the Father would say, “This is my beloved Son, hear Him.” The Son would also say, “I say nothing except what I hear my Father say.” Jesus also made it clear that a person could not claim to know the Father if they didn’t know Him (Jesus). And at the same time, He would say knowing Jesus is knowing the Father.
Such oneness! Almost as though they are one and the same person…which in a sense they are!
This kind of relationship is what Jesus prayed to exist amidst His disciples. His will for us is that we become one as they are one. This is a high calling! one which requires the abandonment of self will, and the adoption of wholehearted, pure Love and transparency.
Just as there is no withholding, no secrecy, no self-seeking or self-glorification between the Father and Son, God calls us to this high standard of
The true evidence of our union with God is our union with one another.
There can be no true, significant witness to our communities if this oneness is lacking. And this is why the Holy Spirit works hard to see it happen. He is God’s answer to Jesus’ prayer here!
Lord, I ask for the heart of oneness with my brothers and sisters. Help me learn how You and the Son walk in oneness. I declare unity in Your body.
