Verse of the day
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden
While speaking with His disciples, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world…”
Can you confidently make the same declaration? Why not say after me, “I am the light of the world.”
An acknowledgment of this truth should not be interpreted as self-conceit. It is rather an acknowledgment of our true nature and identity in Christ which the next part of today’s verse does well to establish.
A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden
You are the city set on a hill, of which He speaks. You are being built on the foundation of Christ—the hill of which He speaks, for He is the rock upon which His church is built. And being set on a hill, you cannot be hidden.
Subtly but surely, Jesus tells us of how much He is committed to bringing us into the full manifestation of our nature in Him. Though the world may seem so full of darkness than it is by light, Jesus assures us that we cannot be hidden. As we fellowship with Him, as we know and are known of Him, and as we come into an understanding of our identity in Him, the world would see us.
Yet, to be seen by the world should not be our reason for seeking to know and be known of God. You are not built on a hill so you can be seen by those in the valley. That would reek of selfishness. You are built on a hill because the hill (of Christ) is where you belong. It is from such height you can see with clarity (from heaven’s point of view) and adequately explore the world. You are built on a hill because naturally, you are meant to stand out, just like the sun. The world only sees you as an added result of being on a hill.
Therefore beloved, spend intimate moments with Him. Stay on the Hill. This how you’re built. This is how you weather the storms of life. This is how you shine.
